Using Lawn Mowers in Your Garden

A lawn mower is a great tool to keep your lawn clean and trimmed. However, using a mower is not an easy job. You need to mow properly without damaging the grass. In addition, the mower might cause certain problems and injuries if not used properly.

Reduce Risk to the Grass:

You can achieve this by following the right mowing practices. Proper mowing techniques dictate that you mow the lawn at least once in two weeks. Weekly mowing is infinitely preferable, but once in two weeks is also acceptable.

Cut off only one-third of the grass height. This is essential for the grass to thrive. Different varieties of grass have different range of mowing heights. In extreme weather, it is advisable to stay at the upper end of the range, whereas during a cooler weather you can cut it a little lower.

Change the mowing direction every time you mow. This reduces the damage to the grass, and allows it to thrive naturally. In addition, ensure that the blade of your mower is sharp, because a dull blade can injure the grass.

Reduce Risk to the Mower:

Mow the grass only when it is dry. Wet grass sticks to the mower blades, thus making it difficult to operate.

Always switch off the mower while moving on sidewalks and pathways that are devoid of grass. It could destroy the blades of the mower, as well as the pathway.

Next, always check the fuel in your mower, as neglecting this can deteriorate your mower’s engine. Maintain a steady schedule of lubricating the parts of your lawn mower to ensure flawless performance.

Keep the mower’s deck clean, as a dirty deck uses up more fuel and damages the lawn as well.

Reduce Risk to Yourself:

Used lawn mowers pose maximum risk to the person operating them or standing in close vicinity to them. Remove any obstacles such as pebbles and toys that can be thrown into the air by the mower. They are potentially dangerous to people standing near the mower.

Always use earplugs and earmuffs. Mowers, edgers and trimmers are quite loud and the usage of protective measures is highly recommended. Never re-fuel the mower while the engine is hot. This could cause the fuel to spill over and scald you. Always allow the mower to cool down before refueling.
